I do love Facebook and have joined many Local History and Wildlife based groups which are most informative, accurate and with wonderful photography.
So, I thought I would explore the Gardening/Allotment/Veg Growers groups too and chose three of them.
Oh my giddy aunt.....I have never come across such a load of tosh! Some of the advice given to inexperienced gardeners ranges from the sublime to the ridiculous. I just don't know where they get these ideas from, or if they actually use the methods themselves.

A "newbie" to veg growing asked, what the yellow residue on her tomatoes was. One sensible answer was, pollen from the flowers. The one which made me goggle was from a woman who said, the tomato stems ate insects and the yellow residue was the result. :?:

Another rather smug chap posted that all his tools were now cleaned and hung up in his allotment shed, ready for use next spring. And he had covered all his plot with cardboard. Sounds like his allotment is closed for the winter, then...

This forum is always the place I turn to, if I have a problem or need advice or just someone else more knowledgeable than myself, to give an opinion.
Having read the advice and suggestions in these groups makes me appreciate all of you on here so much.
Thanks to all of you for being so wonderful!!

Kitchen Garden has a FB page - not up to speed really yet, as none of you guys are answering, / joined allowing the untested & uninformative to post misinformation!

Somehow, I don't like the idea of Facebook although most of the (mainly younger) members of my family seem to use it.

This forum will do me very nicely and, yes, many thanks to all of you!

I love Facebook for many reasons, Monika.

Initially, we joined it because my stepson lives in USA and it was a great..free...way of keeping in touch. Now they have a three year old daughter, it's wonderful, as her Mum always keeps us up to date with her latest antics, and regular photos and videos.

I have made many internet friends over the last six years, lots of them overseas which I am in contact with regularly for a chat.

Then there are the fantastic groups I mentioned.

Lastly, there are the free games I play, to keep the old brainbox in good order...hopefully.

I would really miss it now.

Asking for gardening advice on Facebook. :D :D :D

Thats akin to standing on a busy high street and asking every passerby your question. You might get a few useful answers hut you'll get a pile of ignorance, stupidity and "believers" grinding their particular axe.

A forum like this is a better bet, easier to see people's posting history amd discern their knowledge level before following any given advice.

Some of the stuff I see on some German Shorthaired Pointer pages I follow on facebook is lamentable and gets bitchy, pun intended.
Do not put off thanking people when they have helped you, as they may not be there to thank later.

The only reason I use facebook is to find out what my grandson is upto, its surprising how people air their life to complete strangers, but at least I find out what he is up to and can kick his backside when its needed, his father died when he was 8 years old, hes now pushing 16 he's a good lad but I still keep my eye on him

I can't get on with Facebook. So much blather. Confusing interface.

Unfortunately the evidence suggests that brain training does not work. The brainbox is much better served by going for a run or doing other exercise - even gardening energetically ! It's blood supply to the brain that does the trick, you see, and sitting down doing puzzles and games does nothing for this. Also remaining socially active helps, and again sitting playing games and doing puzzles is counterproductive there too ...

Tony....I hope you aren't under the impression that I rely solely on Facebook for all my entertainment/amusement/brain exercise?

I work, care for my elderly Dad, have good "real" friends and a social life, our allotment and garden at home...when I have time..and a house to run. When I finally sit down of an evening, my laptop provides relaxation and a bit of fun via Facebook. It isn't my entire world.

Sorry Elaine, my little rant was not a comment on your lifestyle but was really a spilling over of some of the worries affecting my own.

I think it must be an age thing. I've found other gardening websites and others informative at first, but many have people talking complete garbage and then getting either political or religious and ending up insulting one another. This seems to be the norm for American ones in particular. So I've stopped bothering with them.

Tony, no problems... :)

Plumpudding; I haven't explored any American ones and tried the ones I was talking about out of curiosity really and have only posted a couple of times. I answered someone's query with advice gained from my own experiences with the topic and someone else posted almost immediately, saying I was wrong. (I wasn't.)

As Peter pointed out...and I said myself in my initial post.. on this site we have a wealth of folks who are really knowledgeable and we can rely on them for sensible, accurate, friendly advice and opinions, with no "clever clogs" attitudes.
I love this site and don't need any others.

Not having a go at you Elaine and I'm sure most of us have had a trawl round other sites. I agree with you that this is a nice friendly informative one and if we stick to gardening there don't seem to be any skirmishes :D

Dear OH. Yes, I do keep in touch with both of them. Lizzie and I met up and have become good pals and I speak to Grockie on FB. Love Lizzie to bits.
