Very poorly tree

Can't identify that mould? Got a great tip for keeping slugs at bay? Suggestions for organic weed control? Post them here...

I have a winter flowering cherry tree....about 40 years old...but flowers profusely every winter. I thought it was looking a bit odd the other day and found all the branches dead..and then noticed bacterial canker had encircled the top of the trunk. It must have been very quick as it was lovely all this winter. I'm thinking the poor thing has had it?
Anyone know if it can be saved? Or shall I get the chopper out :(

I've done a bit of research and it doesn't look good.

I gave up on mine the year before last following an attack of canker - I tried a few things I found when I searched but none worked & it just got worse & worse with branches dropping in the mldest of winds. It went on the bonfire!

Thank you Westi - you've confirmed my fears for the sad looking tree.

Oh well, it's had a good life. :(

Confirm that one. A 40 year old cherry has had a good life! Ours had the chop this last autumn and is now drying out in the woodstore...

Replaced it (slightly to one side) with a pear tree. So see it as an opportunity!
