This morning we have the first snow of the winter on the ground. A couple of days ago we spotted the first lamb at a farm a couple of miles down the road. The farm is where we usually see the earliest lambs of the season, but in January/February rather than November. Has the farmer being trying early lambing, or was it just a prematurely randy tup on the loose. Must go and check up this morning.

That really is early, and if it's new farming practice I'd be very worried for the future of this young creature being born at a time when it still has to endure the hardship of the entire winter ahead of it. At least early Spring lambs have a better chance of surviving with a shorter time to wait before better weather arrives. And with grass pastures now stopping to grow, or growing more slowly during winter months, how can sheep suckling their lambs get enough nourishment from the grass over a prolonged period?
