Hi.
I bought some of these seeds from the KG magazine to try instead of sprouts this year, but am a bit confused. The packets says they are a cross between sprouts & kale, which produce rosettes to use as sprouts. Mine justs looks like curly kale to me, so I have been using the leaves as normal kale.
Did anyone try these this year?
Do you think, because I have used the leaves, I won't get any "sprouts" later?

Hi Lucy's Mum. I was going to try these, but our local nursery didn't have the seeds, as they are new, maybe not many have tried to grow them yet? Maybe they will leaf up again if you leave them in, most brassicas do, I usually harvest mine and then let them leaf up again for my chickens daily greens, which seems to ensure nice rich golden yolks.
Sit down before a fact as a little child, be prepared to give up every preconcieved notion, follow humbly wherever and to whatever abyss nature leads, or you shall learn nothing.

Hi Lucysmum
I have not tried growing Petit Posy Kale but I read the writeup when it was introduced and like all Kale's they put out side shoots and this is the crop. I'm afraid that it is some time since I read the article but I assume that these sideshoots are tighter growing than the norm, which are generally like Broccoli Spears and occur late on in the life of the plant.
I suspect that if the plants have not been picked-out then it is perfectly possible that the "sprouts" will appear in due time.

Thank you.
I think I'll leave them alone now & see what happens later. Hope I have something for Christmas or I'll have to buy sprouts!

I am also growing them but it is a Winter crop, like Brussels or kale. I think that you started picking too early.

Hi Realfood,
You are so right. Although I have not yet grown this crop I think that the leaves should not be picked and the "sprouts" will appear at the leaf axil probably much later on in the year. I wonder if they will be before or after Christmas. Have you grown these before or is this your first time?

It is the first time of growing them, so I will need to wait and see what happens. They are certainly growing vigorously.
