Web hosts

Hello everyone.

I’m not sure where this question should go so apologise if you have to move it. I am on our local horticultural society show committee and as the only member who can write web pages I got volunteered to make a website for the show. It is just an advert for the show and a copy of the schedule but we need as server to host it. We don’t want to spend much, so I wondered about the “free web space” adverts on the net. Does anyone have experience of them and on the principle of “you don’t get owt for nowt” is there a catch?

My website is created using a freebie http://glallotments.co.uk/default.aspx and it really is totally free unless you need a particular address. It is a web management system and easy to use no html etc. See here http://www.officelive.com/en-GB/

I did use a freebie provided by BT too which was good although they have changed the system which is why I changed my site. This is free for communities. See https://www.communitykit.co.uk/p_HomeMay2010.ikml

I've been using the systems since 2006 and have had nothing to pay - except about £12 for my web address (three years worth). The payment was my choice as I wanted to choose my web address otherwise it is completely free.

PS If you don't want to use it other than to announce evenets - what about a blog as an alternative?

I use the BY one for my society website as it is completely free.

Thanks for the information, I have just had a go at BT's site. However I have a problem with template web pages. I guess it is my fault but I can't make them work. Give me a blank page in microsoft front page or notepad and I can make something that looks OK, but if I alter templates I end up with a dogs breakfast.

I know that the BT system was set to change but hadn't thought it had yet. When I used the BT system you could have a blank template or even work in html.

Not sure whether you could create a page in Front Page and then just copy and paste the html in?

I plucked up courage and chose one of the free hosts that offer both FTP uploads and no compulsory adverts on the site. The system worked in a similar way to the one I used for business and, up to now, I haven’t found a catch. It comes with a rather unwieldy free domain name, http://www.owhss.webfreehosting.net though I think you could change it to a proper one if you want.
