As a resident of Leeds for 40 years (up to 10 years ago) how this saddens me - and makes me glad I am no longer there :(

This is why City Council officers are paid so handsomely. I'm rather glad it's been cut down — it's not Christmas yet. Call us old fashioned, but myself and Mrs Leiter don't put our tree up until Christmas Eve.

I don't see why they can't just put this same tree back up again. It'll be a foot or two shorter, is all, with perhaps a few broken bows which can be pruned out. It's the fairy I feel sorry for, though.

I saw this on TV and the worry is that a riot could break out at the demonstration on Saturday between two very opposed factions apparently thousands of people are expected to attend the EDL's rally in City Square and a rival protest by Unite Against Fascism (UAF) in Victoria Gardens. Apparently there was trouble at a similar event in Manchester where policing costs were apparently £200,000.

It seems this 'event' is a being repeated in lots of major cities as an earlier demo was held in Birmingham

The council have been covering statues - windows have been boarded etc. I guess the worry with the tree is if someone tried to push it over onto the crowds. The article seems to imply that the tree was removed on request from the police.

The cost of freedom of speech? :(

Seems so but I wonder how much the whole thing has cost in policing and protecting everything etc.
