This top caterpillar caused a bit of a panic on one of the plots on our site. It's an elephant hawkmoth larva.
The lower image could well be mistaken for another giant caterpillar - maybe the giant cucumber moth?

Our kids primary school had poplar trees and they gave an annual crop of Poplar Hawk Moths, see http://ukmoths.org.uk/show.php?id=28
