It's happened, finally. Rocky moved to Worcestershire last week and is now happily showing off to a multitude of women and a couple of ducks.

He apparently spent the first few hours discovering that electric fences make his feathers stand on end, but now that he has the hang of that he's doing fine. As he's in a secure area, the chicken shed door isn't shut at night and he's been spotted snoozing on the roof at all hours and crows madly at every opportunity. Luckily there's no one around to hear him except his new owners, who love the noise.

I sent all his press cuttings on ahead of him so they knew just what a famous chick they were taking on and he's being shown off and spoilt rotten already.

I may even go and visit him next year as yes, I do miss him dreadfully. My girls however, may miss him but do look very relieved and can walk around without fear of being jumped on every 10 minutes. Penelope is already taking over as team leader, despite being the youngest and the newcomer.

My dear Chantal, i think you have been so brave sending Rocky to pastures new, but doesn't he look content already.

I'm sure there is a lovely childrens story just waiting to be wrote about him, starting from his hard start in life, up until the present time. :)
Kind Regards, Old Herbaceous.

Aww don't OH, you'll make me cry (again). I'm really so very happy that I've found him a lovely home as noisy, over amorous cockerels are not all that popular and generally totally unnecessary. :(

The more distant neighbours who don't really know me think that as he stopped crowing two days before Christmas that he'd been served up for Christmas lunch! We're still trying to convince people that he really is still alive and living elsewhere.

Best wishes to Rocky in his new paradise.
If I were you, I'd keep an eye on that Penelope - she has a definite look of Thatcher dominance about her

I am Alan, I can see the same in her as you can . She's only been with us around 3 months and was the only one of the girls who stood up to Rocky. She's not a bully (yet) but when there's food to be had, she's always determined to get her share and shoves the others out of the way. The white chicks (Leia, Shelley and Yoko) are really quite in awe of her, but Selsey's not having any of it and shoves her back, so hopefully that will keep her in order.

One thing I am sure of, no more cockerels, they're beautiful and funny but so much hassle (famous last words...).

Dear Chantal, i must admit, i think Penelope looks at lot like yourself.

A lovely looking bird, but with a look in her eye that says, don't you even think about it O.H.

I don't know whether i'm brave enough to even look at the reply.

As I'm a good mood today I'm taking it as a compliment OH. I will however mark it down in my little book of possible insults ready to be retrieved if I ever need it as ammo.

As I just said, boys are so much hassle...

Chantal

Is that why you called her Penelope?

Possible meanings of the name from Wikipedia:

The origin of her name is Pre-Greek and is more likely related to the Hesychius' gloss πηνέλοψ/*πηνέλωψ "some kind of bird" (arbitrarily identified today with Eurasian Wigeon), where -έλωψ is a common Pre-Greek suffix for predatory animals, however the semantic relation between the proper name and the gloss is not clear. In folk etymology, Πηνελόπη is usually understood to combine the Greek word for "web" or "woof" (πήνη / pene), and the word for "eye" or "face" (ὤψ / ōps), which is considered the most appropriate for a weaver of cunning whose motivation is hard to decipher, or alternatively πήνη and λέπω "peel, skive" (akin to leper) due to the shroud-unbraiding part of her myth.

Err no.

When I received her I was told she was called Penny but in fact she turned out to be Peggy (Penny being her pal who died). I thought she looked too important to be either Penny or Peggy, so called her Penelope, which suits her very well. Lady Penelope.

Good try though Alan
