Red throated diver

We had an exciting bird adventure on Wednesday when a local farmer's wife rang to say that they had seen a "strange bird" in the field for the last two days, could I come to have a look at it (I am warden of the local Nature Reserve)? So husband and I went to the farm and found it was a red throated diver in winter plumage, far from the coast! It was obviously unable to take off and shuffled along the ground on its belly. As I knew that they are almost exclusively water birds, we caught it in a box, took it to the nearby reservoir and "tipped" it into the shallow water, from where it very happily swam off and immediately dived as well. It has now been there for two days and birdwatchers are arriving from far and near to see it! Hopefully, when it has had a good feed and rested from its ordeal, it will take off and return to the sea!

I hope your Red Throated Diver has recovered. It was very lucky you caught it.
Plumpudding, it stayed for 10 days, swimming and diving, and lots of birdwatchers came to see it (somebody, not me, had reported it on Birdline Northeast, on the internet and in the Yorkshire Post), then one morning it had disappeared. We very much hope that it has now found its way to the coast!
