As the weather is now quite mild in lancashire , is it too early to plant onion sets this weekend, Are there any pluses or minuses in so doing.

Dear Brenjon, I have just planted my shallots this week but I have put plastic-glass cloches over them (mainly to stop them being pulled out). I am a lot further north then you but also a lot nearer the coast - I can see the sea from the front road! - so we maybe don't have as harsh a winter as you. Our little area hasn't had any snow this year and we are never on the weather maps either, not even the local one 
It's probably worth risking as long as you can protect them if it turns very cold again which it well might. If they get frosted they might think they' ve had their summer and are into their second year - in which case they will bolt/flower without forming proper onions.
