Can anyone tell me the difference between vermiculite and perlite and do they have a preference?

Good afternoon Susexfleur, i always use fine grade vermiculite for just covering seed sown on compost, and i use perlite for mixing in with compost to make it more free draining.
There are a lot more technical variations, but i shall leave that for someone with a more technical mind to explain.
