I think I mentioned somewhere before that our garden has a neglected orchard in it..... This year we've had our first bumper crop since taking it on and doing some severe pruning. We've figured out which are eaters and which are cookers too. But how do we find out what the variety is?
The eaters are huge, larger than the cookers and have a speckled reddy string to their markings. Taste is mild with a little sharpness to it and a nice crunchy flesh.
Unknown apple variety

There's a number of Apple Days around the country during October. If you take your apple to one of them, they'll identify it for you. I think Brogdale offer an identification service too - you could check their website.

Yes at a £.
RHS do it for members I believe.
Do not put off thanking people when they have helped you, as they may not be there to thank later.

You could try the "National Apple Register" a large book that covers all Apple varieties. You could reserve it at your local libary. To buy, it costs about £60. We have an old orchard ( planted 1924 )and i found this book really useful in helping to identify by Leaf shape, fruit shape, size and coloration. Good luck, and bring on the Apple pies
Take only photo's,leave only footprints.

cheers guys. Brogdale have quite a few pics for ID on their site too. Most of the apples look too small to be these though.
I'll pop down the library and see if they can order that book in
