For the last three weeks, on any sunny day like today is here, I have been surrounded by flocks (if that is the right word) of butterflies - mostly Peacock, Small Tortoiseshell, Red Admiral, a few Cabbage Whites and a brown one I can never get near enough to identify. And all that after a summer with barely a sight of any butterflies.

We haven't had as many as that here, Alan, but it always amazes me where they suddenly appear from.

We have had a slight surge of the same butterflies as you, Alan, with also the occasional painted lady and one wall brown, but the numbers are far, far lower than, say, 10 years ago. The buddleias are finished now but the sedums and michaelmas daisies are starting to flower, so I am hoping for more visits!

I'm getting a lot on apple windfalls, first the chicken have a go and then all manner of insect life appears. I've had the usuals plus an unusual which was a Jersey Tiger Moth. We took a pic and had to look it up to identify it as it shouldn't be here apparently! It is a moth which flies during the day and Jersey and Dorset are its usual haunts. It was feeding on Lythrum Firecandle that grows around the pond and it has distinctive stripes.
