My fig tree has made so much new growth this year I really must do some serious pruning. I usually lightly tidy it up in Jan or Feb. but now it is 8-10 ft tall and spread more than 10 ft. I would think. It needs cutting back to a more manageable size; is Jan - Feb is still the best time to do it?

Many thanks
Beryl.

Evening Beryl,
Found this information online in article on growing figs;hope it helps.

Pruning in late March, before growth starts, consists of cutting out any dead wood or dieback to clean white healthy wood. Remove tips of young shoots. Remove any thin weakly branches, just keeping 'thick' ones. which are the fruit bearers. When growing well there will not be many of the former. As mentioned before, take out growing tips of the new season’s shoots around the middle to end of April before growth starts, this will encourage the fruit to grow before the leaves.

Many thanks Snooky. I have masses of the smaller thin branches that have grown this year. Looks like I will have to be patient till next spring before cutting back.

Beryl.
