Why is it that some seed packet suppliers seem to put the opening flap.seal for their packets at the bottom of the packet instead of the top?

I've just been trying to sort out my somewhat deranged seed packet boxes and it's annoying that some packets have to be stored upside down with the picture and the wording upside down to prevent the aluminium foil packets containing the seeds falling out.

I know one could always tear open the packet at the top where there is no sealed flap but when one is working with grubby hands, the instinct is generally to go for easier-to-open end.

It's also very annoying that the 'sow by' dates are usually printed on the opening flap. Unless you open very carefully the dates become unreadable.

Why does one get the impression that seedsmen rarely sow from their own seed packets?

I once read some very good advice that major influencers within any commercial company which sold to or dealt with the public should try calling their company',s Customer Service Helpline as a consumer rather than just sending an email or popping downstairs to talk to Joe in that department. They would then soon find out for themselves where the weak links were in getting the goodwill of their customers.

The particular packet I was complaining about was actually, I think, a free packet of seeds which came with my Kitchen Garden magazine so perhaps I shouldn't look a gift horse in the mouth!

Hear hear from me too. Most annoying. I usually slit the top of the offending packets with my penknife.

Most annoying was a certain company who'd skimped on the glue on the flap at the bottom end and as I walked down the plot to direct sow my runner beans... well you can guess what happened. I spent the next 20 minutes hunting for, and then separating, the beans back into their varieties. Look on the bright side, at least they were big seeds and I could tell them apart!

I agree I hate having to carefully open the packets from the bottom and then have them in my box upside down. It drives me mad.

What also drives me mad is my OH who rips the top off the seed packets, in a big way then I can't see what the seeds were (he always sows our carrots and peas)

Edwin Tucker seeds come in resealable clear plastic bags, the date information on a sticky paper label folded over the top pf the opening end. Seed details on a card in the bag.

I have an old pair of scissors in the paint pot I keep my labels, pencil and spatulas in, that are all needed when sowing, so I cut a thin strip off the top of the packets. Also used for the foil inners.

I like the Tuckers as well Peter, but just wish the card inside with the detail was a couple of millimeters smaller. Sometimes it is a just fit & it is hard to re-seal & as they don't all have an inner separate seed packet the re-seal is essential to get perfect!
