Rotting sprout tops

Most of our sprout tops are rotting - the sprouts themselves are fine, large and tasty. Do I take the tops off or leave them on? And why have they rotted? We have had good dry weather for the last few weeks and the site is open and airy. The plants are 2.5 feet apart.

I am not sure what the cause could be for rotting sprout tops, I know they deteriorate sometimes after frost and wet weather.
My problem is black spots on the sprouts and the foliage, some sprouts have the black 'slime' inside when the outer skin is removed. Any clues?
