Was waiting on my doorstep when I got home tonight, first one I've seen in years.

I hope it was wanting the snail entree, followed by slug supreme with maybe iced gastropod for dessert :D

We often hear individuals snuffling about or eating supper but we rarely actually see them, as the choicest pickings in our garden are in the veg patch and the outside light doesn't quite reach that far.

Lovely picture. My daughter in Clapham, Bedford, has recently discovered that they have a visiting hedgehog. The bird-feeder is that attraction which is how I discovered that we also had one when I set up a wild-life camera there. As for snails, I had a bit of a surprise last night when I went out into my observatory and moved the dome - a crunching noise! Yes - the small snails were roosting there, together some earwigs or millipedes. Unbelievable that I should have to put slug pellets around the concrete base! And just in case anyone is interested in astronomy from light polluted back gardens I have a web site http://gardenastronomy.moonfruit.com/

That's nice welcome Peter. Hope you've got a few cans of meaty cat food available to fatten him up before he goes into hibernation. Sadly haven't spotted one in our garden for ages although I think they still visit occasionally because we see little black turds on the lawn. Wary about leaving food out for them though because we once again have a problem with rats who would probably eat whatever we left out.

Hedgehogs finish off any debris from our bird tables too. The same happens in my sisters garden. A few years ago we had a ground feeding station on our patio which was only a few centimetres off the ground but the hedgehogs squeezed under it to clear up.
