I have just found a newt in a half full bag of compost that has been sat untouched all year in a damp part of the garden. I left it where it was so as not to disturb it. The thing is in the brief glimpse i got i also noticed some small white eggs in there too. Personally i thought they look like slug eggs. Before i destroy them at some point this winter, i want to make sure there is no chance they are not newts eggs? Am i right in thinking newts only lay their eggs in water?

Correct - if you Google Newt spawn you will see it is like small Frog spawn. Is your Newt doing a mini-dragon job and guarding its hoard of slug eggs, I guess they are part of its diet.
