Ye good olde days when......

Today has been an odd sort of day in respect of TV and what was available to watch and it's thrown up a real mix of emotions.

With my 8 year old suffering severe toothache and feeling generally misearble, counting down the minutes and seconds until I can get her into the dentist in the morning (I hope), she's spent a fair few hours cuddle into me, watching a variety of things:

Paulie - a disney type film about a parrot;
Wallace and Grommits childrens Prom - which was fantastic and enjoyed by both of us;
The Wizard of Oz - another traditional if old fashioned film which both my girls enjoyed; and then
The Edinburgh Military Tatoo .......

...... and it was this wonderfully, ornate and tradition filled programme which has really riled me this evening!!!!

When did we stop relishing and celebrating our traditions and heritage?
At what point did our 'National' television station become too embarassed to air, in full and glorious technicolour and detail, a quintessentially British display of pomp and ceremony (even if a few foreign Military forces have now joined in) which celebrates in a breathtakingly skilled and beuatiful way, the marches, music and drills which are the end product of centuries of training, honing, creation and practice;
And since when has the likes of 'Eastenders' become more important than displays of our proud history and national pride?

In the good olde days (that would be around the 1970's and 80's) a whole evening would be dedicated to the Military Tatoo. Entire families would gather to watch the spectacle and to 'ooo' and 'aahh' at the unbelievable precision of the marching bands as they played flawlessly whilst performing pinwheels, cross overs etc

Today, however, a scant hour was all that the beeb could spare which was woefully inadequate for a true appreciation and acknowledgement of the amount of rehearsal the service men and women must have had to put in to deliver the level of perfection we witnessed.......

..... but god forbid that such a display of Britishness should result in 'Eastenders' being cancelled for one evening or shown at a different time! No! Only football is allowed that particular honour and doesn't that say it all

Old wive's tale THAT WORKS!

go to the chemist and get some OIL OF CLOVES and pop the smallest ammount on the affecting tooth.

This should deaden the pain, but only apply the tinyest ammont.

Took her to the dentist this morning and it isn't teeth related at all. It appears that she has somehow managed to hurt the tags which hold the mouth to the gum. The dentist was perplexed as he says it is perfectly normal for children to hurt one tag (toy or finger in mouth causing the 'trauma') but to have 2 tags hurt at the same time is unusual.

No idea what has caused the damage but it must have been quite forceful as the gum is tender and swollen. Should be better in a couple of days if she keeps her toys in her hand and not in her mouth

Hope your daughter is feeling a lot better now. Regarding the use of oil of cloves, you shouldn't use it neat as it can cause permanent tissue damage. Most of what they sell nowadays is in a diluted form so should be safe, but check first.
