Cheeky house sparrows
Moderators: KG Steve, Chantal, Tigger, peter
We have plenty of house sparrows around us (contrary to the national trend, it appears) - nice to see and hear them but this year they have been a blooming nuisance eating our beetroot, spinach and lettuce seedlings and nibbling the pea leaves. It's happened before but I always thought they were after the water in the leaves in dry periods. As there has been plenty of rain this year, I think they are just doing it for fun. So all the seed beds now have chicken wire netting over them.

Our house sparrows (also in plentiful supply despite national average) are also partial to the odd strawberry AND oregano leaves

Dear Monika, exactly the same here, and they battle their way under the netting to get to the crops.
I wonder if they are trying to supplement a food supply that might not be about this year!

Kind Regards, Old Herbaceous.
