Can't identify that mould? Got a great tip for keeping slugs at bay? Suggestions for organic weed control? Post them here...

I am also mystified, going back many years as a boy on my Dad's farm in the late 40's early 50's, we had what was called in Cheshire a green crop field which consisted of mangels (later fodder beet) ox cabbage or kale with about 6-8 acres of spuds & half a doz rows of carrots, which were mainly for family & friends . I can never remember any probs with fly on the carrots or cabbage whites on the cabbage/kale. It was very organic in those days as we didn't use any sprays or chemicals & mainly FYM with some fert which we mixed ourselves. In those days people were digging for victory, everyone was growing stuff along with rabbits kept for meat & chickens, so I don't know the answer. Today I'm plagued with all manner of pests, find it very hard to grow cabbage or carrots, I over winter spring cabbage which I can use before the pesky maggots get to them in eary summer.

How do organic farmers produce fields of CRF-free carrot? They are not grown under fleece or netting, so how do they keep the little blighters off?
