My sweet pea sowing tips tuppence worth:
Sow into the folds of a moist kitchen towel, sealed in a used margarine tub. Keep them in a warm room but not the airing cupboard, which is too hot. Check the seeds daily and prick them out 5 to a 5" pot as soon as they germinate. I do not nick, abrade or pre-soak the seeds.
I gave up autumn sowing many years ago when I found that late winter sown sweet peas were just as early and subject to fewer losses.
I have no evidence for this, but I reckon the dearer the seeds, the poorer the germination rate.
