Just bought some narcissus in pots...to pop in the bare patches in the flower beds....and was wondering why these bulbs are crammed into the pots with at least the top half of the bulb exposed. When we plant in the garden we are always told to plant several inches deeep. So how come the plants from the garden centres are only "half" planted in their pots?

I might be wrong but I think its to bring them into flower early.
More sales that way.

Also, the growers can put them in smaller pots and use less compost which makes it more profitable.
