Where is everybody? Surely not on the allotment? Christmas shopping?
It's getting quieter and quieter around here.

Clive, how new do you mean? If you or somebody else has just built it it could well be bringing Windows and all the other installed programs up to date using Microsoft Update - hopefully will settle down in a few hours depending on your connection speed.

The "new" computer is an ex office HP Compaq dc7600sf.....it came with XP pre installed...and has happily accepted all that I have transfered to it. It is up to date with all things virus guard wise...latest AVG
I ran it only briefly to transfer things from this older similar machine a couple of months back but never ran it for long due to commitments for work....but a little bit more time to run it now.
Just when you think all is well and it has been on a good while it shuts down and reboots.
..sometimes it stays on for a few minutes again but more often than not it fails during reboot and gets into a bit of a cycle......
When on form it goes like the wind...especially relative to the machine I type this on now....

Clive, first is the fan working or not?
Second, check that all major and connectors components are correctly seated.

Hello Peter,
The fans are working ok...in fact as a try out to try to eliminate the thought of it being an overheat shut down I set the idle setting of the fans from standard setting 1 up to 2 and then again to 3 which makes the machine sound more like a vacuum cleaner...it made no change to the initial failure time....on setting 3 it would be pulling my breakfast cereal out of my bowl as I sit here first thing in the morning.
I had also checked all the connectors I could find to make sure they were in place...and secondly after no change..removed those to major componants and re fitted them. Also the strips of memory.
I have 2 of these types..the one that I took to work lives in the potting shed in quite a harsh environment and goes well...touch wood...
Thank you for your thoughts.....
...next..?

I don't know a lot about computers Clive, but it sounds like a corrupt hard drive to me.
Kind Regards, Old Herbaceous.

Dodgy memory is a distinct possibility...I did have a look at that idea yesterday evening...
....but my dodgy memory after a hard days gardening left me muddled as to which of the identical strips was which.
.one now has a pen mark on its type sticker ready for another more awake test session.....
