Well, I have printed that off, Alan, so that I don't get into trouble in Wales!

Speaking of "false friends", as you were: how about "Gute Fahrt!" in German which means "Pleasant journey!" as you might bid somebody farewell at the station. It always amused people when we saw off German friends.

It's been a glorious day here, too, buy the way, and we scythed another large part of the Nature Reserve and tossed the hay on the previously mown area.

It's the big Village Show on Saturday and I have entered loads of things - so wish me luck.

Many thanks for your good luck wishes, all. The Show is open to the public from 2.30 to 4.30 and it's in Embsay Village Hall. We usually have a great number of entries and with the good weather in the run-up to it this year, there should be plenty to see (vegetables, flowers, flower arranging, handicrafts, photographs, baking, preserves, sweets, children's classes).

If you are around the area, see you there!

With all the wet weather my hedge cutting is still unfinished for the year. I was getting to feel guilty till I spotted this:

The very first Leylandii produced are still growing and are over 150ft tall so there is plenty more feet to go in the argument.
The strange thing is that when I had 100 Leylandii planted as a wind break and they deteriorated and needed felling I had taken down three trees when a LA enforcement officer came and told me to stop what I was doing and when I said that I planted them and I owned them he said he would get a court order to prevent me felling them. He got back here with his order just as the last tree hit the deck!
He threatened legal action but decided to relent and no action was taken. The truth of the matter was that in law he might have had a court order but he was told that any action taken would not stand up in court!

"LA enforcement officer"

Gosh, JB, I'm impressed, we only get West Mercia police here in Worcester. Los Angeles cops might be a bit more exciting

Ho Pongeroon,
The LA is The Local Authority. BTW the enforcement officer was totally out of order because he said that the trees were within a mile of a conservation area and the conservation rules apply.
My property is 1.6 miles outside the conservation area. When it all happened I had not got the foggiest idea of the ruling.
I personally do not see the sense of having a conservation area designated and then be able to control anything within a mile of the boundary. To me, you are either inside the designated area where the rules apply but outside the area by a few feet and the rule should not apply. This is what is wrong with this country where once again we are all governed by unelected people who are not accountable to anybody but the Chief Executive Officer of the council who in turn is accountable to the council members.

Can you imagine how dark it is in that house with the huge tree? They must never see daylight in their front rooms!

Never mind felling the trees, the owner needs sectioning.

Think how much they must save on curtains and window cleaners though.
