A few years ago whilst on holiday in Portugal we often bought onions from the local grocer which were almost sweet and very good in salads. They were pure white in colour. Does anybody know of something similar that can be grown over here (and where to get sets)?

I grow all my onions from seed. You could try going through the Seeds of Italy list to see if any of the descriptions strike you. They have one called Musona described as "white Spanish style cooking onion". I haven't grown it and they don't describe the flavour but they are a helpful company and an email might do the trick.

There is also a white onion set
