Growing Avocado Trees From Seed

Whenever I buy an avocado I always put the seed in an old hyacinth glass.
And every so often one eventually takes root...

And that is where I am now
I have a shoot about 6 inches tall... I know I am now supposed to plant it up in a peat free soil etc and keep it indoors as it is a tropical plant...
But what I was wondering is...

Has anyone else done this? And more importantly...

Any tips?

I've had very mixed success over the years. One of the best was from a fruit bought back from the West Indies. Eventually we had to ask my mother in law look after it whilst we went on holiday and it died

We had one around 4 feet high last year so put it out in the garden border where it thrived. As winter came, I cocooned it in straw inside a plastic mini-greenhouse. However I'm not optimistic after the sharp frosts we had this winter....
