I recorded it for later but it sounds like they lost their way. I always thought the Ribble went (went's the wrong direction I know) Clitheroe, Settle and Ribblehead (the clue's in the name). Todmorden (Lancashire) and Hebden Bridge (Yorkshire) are on the Calder, with the Rochdale Canal running parallel, the Calder then goes East and I think eventually joins the Aire but I don't know how that system reaches the sea but it won't be via the Ribble Estuary, probably Hull.
Thanks for the tip, Geoff, but we do not have a television, so did not see the programme.
About the River Calder: do you know that there is the Lancashire Calder from Colne which, indeed, joins the Ribble near Whalley (between Blackburn and Clitheroe) and the Yorkshire Calder which is a much longer river, flows through Todmorden eastwards, turns into the Aire and Calder Navigation and eventually reaches the Humber and Hull?
Maybe that's where the confusion arose.

Monika : I remembered you were non-tv after I posted.
It wasn't that bad a programme just the silly idea that it was about the Ribble Valley. Did Formby sands first which I reckon are a fair bit South of the Ribble. A diversion onto the grouse moors of the Forest of Bowland then Mitton and Clitheroe with a predictable witches slot but a nice little 1989 piece from Downham. Then they somehow managed to do the Rochdale Canal, Hebden Bridge (Ted Hughes) and Todmorden (Incredible Edible). If you haven't seen one at your son's or whatever they are slightly strange programmes with about 20 minutes of new bits from an area used to link with 35 minutes of old Countryfile clips and a 5 minute weekly forecast. Countryfile itself was from the Dales with some good pictures of Malham, Goredale and a bit about limestone pavement.

Sleety Snow here this morning just as we started Rose pruning... The greenhouse Joiner arrived and decided a job at home in his workshop may be a better bet and headed straight back home.... We set to to tidy the Applestore..I made sure to prop the door back well.
Back to Rose pruning later when it faired up a bit.
The wind has gone round into the NE...so not so hot....

Today we managed some much better weather. ...mighty cool NE wind mind you....but sunny and blue sky..with a few sleety showers about..but they missed us.
After collecting up a clutch of Leeks, Parsnips, Onions and Potatoes for a project in the House I was able to achieve some more open ground digging in the kitchen garden....and a new Pear tree whip went in...with a struggling small root stock example of same moved to a wall side location to give it a second chance.
The greenhouse Joiner was back with us today...and made some good progress such that all wall plates are now in place and all major timbers and a quite a proportion of glazing bars are in..
It had even started to dry a bit on the top in places..such that some soil over a pre Christmas turf repair could be moved about with a rake to get it to work in...
..and more Snowdrops are in evidence..
A Robin has not been far away from me all day...monitoring my digging..whilst out over the front park the 3 Buzzards were about again....
RAF were soaring about to...with Grob Tutor/s from Cranwell buzzing about to the East of us...

Evening Clive, i think others will agree with this, we do enjoy your little write-ups, please keep them coming.
Now there's not many things i would change in my life, but being able to use words better would certainly be near top of the list.

Weather first: I had hoped to do some digging today, but we woke up to a white world again although it mainly melted in sunshine during the day. Frost expected tonight. I've got my onions sown and a few leeks (still on the windowsill in the house), and also the first lot of sweet peas.
About the Country Tracks programme: from what you say, Geoff and Alan, it sounds exactly why we gave up with our television about 20 years ago. The programmes started to be so superficial, nothing in depth and jumping from subject to subject (even that gardeners' programme on Friday night!), so we gave up and read instead. You two could see what was odd about that programme on the Ribble Valley, because you know it. So, if I saw something about, say, Cornwall or Northumberland, either of which I know at all, I bet there would be just as many flaws in it and it would be just as odd to anybody who knows the subject.
