House to rent in Hertfordshire with large vegetable garden.

After 6 fab years we are moving out of our rented cottage, leaving behind raspberries, asparagus, pear trees, gooseberry bush, rhubarb, apple tree, cherry tree, plum tree, and one artichoke plant! I would love someone to move in who could really give the vegetable garden the time it needs , I think I measured it once and it was over 13 metres in both directions. It is fenced off and near to the house so easy to pop out and harvest. Room for chickens and maybe even a pig? House is 3 bedrooms, 1 bathroom with views over farmland, up a private drive and over the walled kitchen garden behind us. 3 kids and puppy forces move to slightly bigger house. Rent is £1200 per month.

Just seen this post. I dont know anyone who could or would want to pay £1,200 per month, £14,400 per year.
What would you have to earn to be able to pay that sort of rent before all the other bills that have to be paid. You could get a mortgage for less than that and the house would be your own in the end. Sorry but I want to move house and have been looking for ages for something that would suit us. Still cant find a cottage with a large garden within commuting distance to our jobs and grandchild that we can afford.

Dear Rachelmarj, sorry you are leaving your cottage and well stocked garden. Sounds if the next tenants will get a good start if they are into gardening. Hope you find the same happiness in your new place.
Dear Catherine, the properties round here are even more expensive, whats a real pity as i'm not likely to get you for a neighbour now.

Dear OH, I wish I wish I wish I could move to Bedfordshire but unfortunatley I am stuck up here in Lancashire. Though I love our area very much, we are within spitting distance of Pendle Hill and the Ribble Valley, (we cannot afford to buy a house in the Ribble Valley) we cannot find a cottage in our area which is suitable. Price wise or otherwise.

No relation to any of the witches of old, I suppose, Catherine? My lovely wife was born and bred in a place between Prestwich and Whitefield [north Manchester] called Besses o'th'Barn - how resonant of bygone days! She's a psychologist - a modern form of witchcraft, some would say!
As for rental, my son lives in a 1-bedroom flat with separate living room in Tooting and pays £800. I know that's London, but it gives you some idea of the cost of renting - and it's all money down the pan. Yes, Catherine, you ar right, and it is just those people who earn large sums who rent short- or medium-term and can afford £1200 a month for a nice property in the country.
The property's market value is probably close to half a million and such a mortgage would be way beyond the capacity of most of us. So what happens? The owner eventually dies or sells and the place cannot be sold on, so it becomes yet another block of flats. What a shame.

No relation Mike though my OH probably thinks otherwise sometimes.
I do understand that a lot of the houses that are charging big rents, particularly down South, are snapped up by companies to put their staff into so that they don't have to commute. I used to clean for one years ago and the chap lived there during the week and went home at the weekend.

The house & set up sounds wonderful - and I expect that for the area, it's a reasonable rent as well.
We moved over to Ireland just over 2 years ago & were followed by my eldest daughter 6 months later. After renting the new large house on an acre for the first year, we bought our place - ok, it needs some work doing, but we're on 2 acres, with the 'old' cottage still usable at the bottom of the garden & 2 bog plots up the road for our house fuel too.
Our mortgage was steep, mind - we bought at the wrong time (grr!!) but monthly payments are £750....
