Planting Japanese/over wintering Onions in March

Hello all

I purchased some over wintering onion sets in the Autumn, but due to twisting my knee badly couldn't get them planted. So I now have plenty of unplanted onions?

Is it better to buy fresh sets for now and plant my existing onions next autumn, or just plant the winter onions in the spring?

Any thoughts would be appreciated

Regarding your Autumn Onion sets, i don't really like to give advice on something that i haven't had experience of myself.
But, i think you will find if you plant them in the Spring they will possibly run to seed just as they are making a useable onion.

I certainly don't think you will be able to keep them until next Autumn, even if you kept them chilled.

Maybe if someone has tried planting them in the Spring, they could let us know what happened.

I'd get them in the ground as soon as the soil permits.

I'd also make sure I had a good lot of normal spring planting sets as a backup.

I'll get them in just as soon as possible, and will cover them up with fleece and yes I'll order plenty in reserve
