Disappointing courgette plants

Can't identify that mould? Got a great tip for keeping slugs at bay? Suggestions for organic weed control? Post them here...

For once we haven't had a surplus of courgettes...in fact we've been a bit disappointed with the yield. The problem isn't with the variety, which I think is Striata di Napoli, but anyway is one we've been very happy with for the last three or four years. We had two plants, and on Sunday I dug them up. This really home to me that they were nothing like as big as in previous years, and when I looked closely, it looked as though they had been attacked/eaten close to where the stem joins the root. What might have caued the damage? Slugs? Earlier in the season I wondered if the plants were underperforming because they weren't getting enough water. However, our daughter, who lives in the West country, grew two plants of the same variety and reported that one did well and one badly, like ours - and she's had plenty of rain all summer.

I grew two plants of a new type to me and had a disappointing result - in fact, I've had a bad summer all round to be honest; no courgettes at all on this yellow variety which was supposed to be a heavy cropper; no sweetcorn, no runner beans either out on the plot or as dwarf beans in a tub......
