A free packet containing the above seeds came with the September issue of KG. Can anyone tell me which packet contains which seeds? I only have "Lettuce" and a series of numbers printed on the white packets.

1. Lettuce 53426/U
2. Lettuce 107163 B

We like lettuce, but are not too keen on the cut and come again variety so I would like to only sow the Winter Density.

Many thanks,
Kind regards,

Elle

You could check the shape of the seed, or if you value you're judgement feel it through the packet!

Lettuce and lamb's lettuce are of differing size and shape. Lamb's lettuce are larger, and rounded; lettuce are narrow and pointed.

I hope they germinate. A few years back, Gardeners' World magazine gave away sunflower seeds, none of which came up, not for me nor anyone else I knew who tried them. I guess with freebie stuff they're under no obligation for it to be any good. Amateur Gardening's freebie seeds are always excellent. I have some fabulous verbenas grown from one of their recent giveaways.
Allotment, but little achieved.

I sowed Lamb's Lettuce and Winter Density from open packets I already had today so opening the freebies reveals that 108371/W is Lamb's Lettuce and 107163 B is Winter Density, well I hope so with the number being different to yours.
Glad to hear it wasn't only me with those Sunflowers.

Thank you all. I think from that I can go for the 107163 B as the Winter Density. I don't value my own judgement at all with no experience of lettuce beyond throwing in a few freebie packets of cut and come again stuff which of course has all sorts of differing seeds. The cos lettuces I have came as plug plants so didn't see the seeds. We have worked out though that we prefer ' a lettuce', to just 'leaves'.

Thanks again for your help.
Kind regards,

Elle

We had the same confusion. Thought someone from KG would know the answer and put us out of our misery! Well maybe not exactly misery!

Hi Folks

Sorry for the delay in responding to this. I can put you all out of your misery and tell you that:

LETTUCE 108371/W is Lamb's Lettuce
LETWINDT 107163/A is Lettuce Winter Density
ONSPWHLIS 102122/R is Onion White Lisbon (Winter Hardy)

Sincere apologies for any confusion. As you'd expect I've made the seed supplier aware of the problem, but I hope you enjoy growing the seeds nonetheless.

Steve

Hi, I know I'm only a Newbie, but my packets from the same mag say:-

LETTUCE 108371/U

LETWINDT 107163/A - which I presume is Winder Density.

Hi Piglet
Yes your first one will be lamb's lettuce, your second packet lettuce 'Winter Density'.
Since my last posting I've also been told by the seed company that code 53426/U (which some of you have on your packets) is also lamb's lettuce.
Hope that helps.

Ours are also labelled differently. Just say LETTUCE on both followed by a number which I can't remember. The packet is in the allotment shed so I can't look.

But I peeped at the seeds and have determined which is which from that.
Strange though that they couldn't stick to the same labelling on all our packets.

Is it me?

They were free! You can always give away any seedlings you don't want!
