I recall an article some time back about the proper way to show your produce at local shows - of course in the KG mag.

I can't remember which issue - and every time I go looking for it in my massive bundle, I get waylaid and never find it.

Can anyone remember which issue it was in or if there is a standard that most shows require?

Thanks

Hello
I can't help with the KG mag article I'm afraid.
Do you have any veg in mind that you want to show? Each type of vegetable has a different presentation. If you could be more specific I guess someone will help.
One serious point to bear in mind when showing your veg is to read the show's schedule very carefully as this should have a few hints about what is required. If you enter something that doesn't fit the schedule I'm afraid your entry won't be judged. A neighbour entered a first class fruit pie in our local show last year but it wasn't judged as it wasn't an 'apple' pie as specified in the schedule!

Quite a lot of local show groups have websites that give info on showing so its worth seeing what Google will turn up. This site for example is full of useful hints on growing and showing:

In small local shows where there are only a few entrants in each class I think that judging is done by casting an experienced eye over things. For larger shows its all much more serious and judges will follow a points scheme, awarding points for things like uniformity, condition, colour and so on.

Don't be put put off though by all this. Just enter some stuff - its all really good fun. Most of the produce from our show is donated by exhibitors to an evening auction in the local pub to raise money for village groups.

Hope this helps

Hi dshannon
Do enter your local show - I have been entering ours for three years now and it is an absolute slice of village life!! Definitely agree that the show schedule must be read very carefully, you could have the best onions for miles around, but if you show the wrong number, or stage them incorrectly you still won't win. That said, show schedules usually come out early in the year and can be studied by the fire with a cup of tea along with the seed catalogues. It makes the winter seem a little shorter! But whatever you do don't be put off, it really brings the community together and is just great fun.
Good luck
Rachel
