Some of the more unusual tomato varieties seem to be getting more popular now, especially the 'black' ones, (Black Krim, Black Russian, Black Cherry) which always seem to be advertised for their excellent flavour, which is sometimes mentioned as being slightly "salty".

Can anybody who grows any 'black' tomatoes recommend them, and for example, say how they compare for flavour with "Gardeners Delight" which always seems to be a benchmark tomato as far as flavour is concerned.

Hi Primrose. I grew Black cherry for two years but haven't bothered with them this year. They were trouble free, extremely prolific (14/16 tomatoes per truss) and attractive to look at. I'm afraid I wasn't impressed by the flavour the first year but my friend was mad about them and took as many as I offered! I tried them again last year to see if I could improve on it but again my delighted friend relieved me of most of the crop. :D I still wasn't keen on them.

I much prefer the yellow cherry varieties, Sun Baby and Sun Gold for their deliciously sweet and tangy flavour. I don't grow the red cherry tomatoes either.
Cheers.
Happy with my lot

We always grow at least one of the 'black' varieties as well as Gardener's Delight (the most important), and find that Bl Krim and Bl Russian are delicious, juicy and with a slightly different taste than GD. Bl Cherry tastes differently from the other 'blacks'. All the bl tomatoes tend to be very thin-skinned, and unfortunately easily split before quite ripe. They are definitely worth trying, but not to everybody's taste.

I'm growing Black Krim again this year and it has a lovely rich flavour which is especially good when cooked. It is delicious sliced and grilled with cheese on toast.

I've also grown Black Plum which has a very nice slightly smokey taste.

If you want a sweet cherry type I would stick to Sungold or Gardener's Delight. Have you noticed that if you grow more than one plant of the Gardener's Delight they have a slightly different flavour? Of the two I've grown this year one is noticeably sweeter than the other.

I've had Black Cherry from Plants of Distinction (don't know if the supplier makes any difference) and thing they're lovely. But thin skinned as mentioned above.
