Bits and Bobs No 11

We once had a camping weekend where parents were invited to visit one afternoon, while the lads were enjoying their Backwoods cooking and earning the badge to go with it. One Mum's face was an absolute picture of amazement, watching her little Cherub heartily scoffing his burnt offering of charred sausage cooked on a green stick..charred black as he had held the sausage in the yellow flame. The poor woman became even more gobsmacked when he wolfed down burnt toast and the revolting mess of choccy banana. She later told me the lad was such a picky eater at home, she had difficulty finding things he would eat and had seriously considered not letting him come to camp for fear he would starve to death. The lad had ravenously eaten anything and everything that he had been given at camp and when I showed her the menu of our mealtimes she was totally fazed as there was nothing on it which he would touch with the proverbial bargepole at home! I suggested she might try letting him make some meals at home to see if it worked...and it did!!! Akela's triumph of child psychology! Happy memories.

Dear Donedigging, i'm sure you know how it is, you put a huge amount of effort into something for a long while and after the event it seems to suddenly catch up with you and you feel exhausted.
Well thats how i felt last night, i had a job to keep my eyes open, but this morning, i feel fully refreshed.

Anyway, excuses out of the way, they had a fabulous turnout, with some of the nicest comments i have heard, about everyones gardens.
The weather turned out just right so this also helped.

I've yet to talk to the owners of the gardens i do, but i hope all was well.

So thank-you for taking an interest Donedigging.

I have just been doing a few hours in my own garden, when i heard this loud buzzing sound, looked up and it was a swarm of Bees desending into Old Codgers Apple tree on his allotment.

OH, glad your village open gardens had a good weekend and a good turn out the weather was ideal for it, I went to one on Saturday up at Barton-Under-Needwood some nice gardens but not many people about hope they had a better turn out on Sunday.

Pleased the open day went ok Old H'..

...We visited the 4 open gardens in Sutton on Sea including a personal guided tour of the new kitchen garden at the first one we visited...with Courgettes already being picked and Runner beans in full flower

We got to sample some fine fish and chips too..

..and called at the s/h shop where I spotted a "new" garden kneeler for Mum.
Bit of luck that..as only on Saturday had I noticed the original one had got some degrading of the plastic.. and it is the older style Croydex plastic kneeler. with the sturdy legs to stop it tipping as you get back up....not the cheapened down wobbly new fangle ones.

Dear Donedigging, thank-you for thanking me, i have now had some lovely feedback from the garden owners as well, just makes it all worth it.

And no, i didn't tell Old Codger about the bees, within 2 hours they had all gone, and he doesn't know what to make of me at the best of times.

Rain at last! We had about an inch today, the first proper rains for weeks and wow, doesn't look everything look fresh and green! Now that the ground is wet, I will plant the Florence fennel tomorrow from roottrainers. The rain should also start filling the potatoes, great stuff.
