Information on tomatoes often gives the days to cropping from transplanting. Now, which transplanting does this refer to? Is it the first transplant from the seed tray, the potting on to larger pots or the final transplant to growing positions?
This is one of those questions which probably wont change the way I grow tomatoes but I feel I need to know the answer!

Then there is the question at what stage does one plant into the final position. I normaly plant out when the first truss of flowers has opened, but so saying that, i did plant six plants that were a lot further advanced.

Hi OH,
I will amend my previous posting and say the time that you should plant them in their final position Which is prior to any show of flower.
I appreciate that many people do exactly the same as yourself but this is normally because they have been waiting for the weather which in turn means that they have sown too early. Better to be a little late rather than early on all frost tender plants.
JB.

Well done Johnboy, that will clarify it for all, before people start asking questions.
Kind Regards, Old Herbaceous.

I wouldn't have thought so - depends on where you grow and how you grow.
Hi Johnboy. Do you feel it makes much difference to the yield/quality to do the final transplanting before any flowers show? I can appreciate that you don't want to stress the plants in any way once flowering has begun, but I think the plants barely notice if they are transplanted with a good root ball from one pot to another, or from the pot to open ground. I agree we can get caught out by the weather - some years I can confidently plant my outdoor tomatoes outside in mid May. This year I had to wait until the end of the month, and then, having planted them out, we got a few more very cool nights in the first week in June. But, hey, I've just picked our first two outdoor tomatoes of the season.
