I Have a small veg patch at home as well as my allotment up the road. The salad leaves and the pansies and violas appear to have been hit by what looks like greenfly, the plants suddenly look floppy and almost mouldy, but the salad looks ok just that the fly is difficult to wash off before putting on the table.
Is it Greenfly, there are evidence of the flies on the sald and the pansies look lie a small greenfly pupae are under the leaves.
Help is welcome...

Hi Compo
Violas and pansies often get affected by small aphis at this time of the year and the plants usually die. Best pulled up and destroyed.
I usually find that fairly mature (ready to bolt to seed) salad plants get affected by aphids (usually smallish and grey or reddish brown). The don't seem to do much damage but, as you say are a b****r to wash off.
Sorry I cannot be of more help, except to let you know you are not alone
