Hi all, I have some white sprouting broccoli that I expected to have produced some edible spears by now, except it hasn't. It is as tall as I am (5 foot 4), and is in vigorous health, but has produced nothing that we can eat. I admit to being a novice with brassicas. I am tempted to cut off the main shoot in the hope that this may prompt the yummy sideshoots to form, but is it too late in the season and do I just have rogue plants? Can anyone please advise?

Hi Organic Mum.
With all Broccoli the main head is cut and this induces the plant to send out the other smaller spears that you are after. This process may take 4 to 5 weeks before you have anything meaningful to eat. Being late in the season for this process I have an idea that it will give spears that will burst into flower quite rapidly so I should watch the plant/s very carefully and pick very readily.

Thanks for that Johnboy, I will give it a go, and watch them like a hawk!
