PLASTIC GARDENING STUFF etc - plants do grow without it

I recycle and reuse pots, fleece, etc and I agree that we should reuse wood and other materials. What I object to is that people use them without design and they end up looking like tat. Whatever we use should be pleasing to look at and practical. People underestimate the skills of craftsmen and don't want to pay a fair price for a well made item that has been designed for a purpose and will last for years.

It is an interesting comment Tigger, do you think that this appealing look should even be necessary on an allotment, I have somedays when I think that I should work harder to make my plot look more like a show plot, as I am not a naturally tidy and am torn between both views. The trouble is with the recyling route is it is not always a pretty one.

Hi all. It never fails to amaze me, the fancy kelt which is on sale at exorbitant prices in the garden centers. At the weekend, I was looking at tools obviously aimed at women....pretty pink things with flowers on and all! A trowel which looked as if it was made of china was £9.99, and they are working tools, not ornaments!They didn't look very robust and if anyone bought me such an item, I don't think I would be impressed! I've always been a bit of a Pansy Potter so tools need to be practical for me! I've lost count of the cheapo trowels which have bent and now have a lovely wooden handled, stainless steel one...it's just the job, as I haven't bent it yet! Cheers

Yes Compo - I do! It only takes a bit more effort to make something look presentable. You wouldn't want your dinner slapped onto the plate, or your clothes badly made, so why shouldn't your allotment look as good? Apart from the appearance, it's also about functionality. Something held together with string isn't going to last.

depends how good the string is... cable ties work wonders as well... i used some to hang some curtains yesterday cos the "proper" plastic hooks had broken
