Yesterday I saw this bird that I didn't instantly recognize with a black head and mantle. Then the penny dropped I have a wonderful male Brambling on the plot. I have never seen a male Brambling in summer plumage before. What a little beauty he is.
Bramblings have bred in Scotland but there is no record of one nesting here in England. I wonder, with fingers crossed, if his mate stayed behind with him after the winter. Could this be a first?
Many years ago I had a breeding pair of Fieldfares which was more than unusual but not unique.

A rarity for this time of the year

Dear Johnboy, if the Bramblings are nesting nearby, and i do hope they are for you, then they couldn't have picked a better place than near a knowledgeable bird watcher like yourself.
Kind Regards, Old Herbaceous.
