can anyone advise me whats good to buy.my boy will be 5yrs old at the end of this month and has mentioned he wants a fishing rod .the aldi flyer has just came through my door and i thought i would buy his stuff from there.he wants to sea fish and as we;ve the mersey just down the road this suits me fine,ill be the one taking him,so nothing to complicated for little old me,as i;ll be the one doing the gory stuff.please help!

have a look down youre local fishing tackle shop they might keep you right,dont spend much as hes only a young un and might not like it,they get bored easily at that age.so if you try the tackle shop they might tell you where something could easily be caught to keep him interested.
I was dragooned into fishing when I started going out with my husband-to-be at the tender age of 16.
Of course he had all the right gear for every type of angling, but he suggested I get a simple 2 piece rod (fibreglass if I remember rightly - don't know if they're still made of that - probably carbon fibre and ten times the price!)
Anyway,
he was right,
It was easy enough to handle and versatile enough to use for spinning, float fishing and even a bit of beach casting and best of all it was tough. Gave me years of good service and quite successful I was too.
It eventually got handed down to my foster son who promptly flogged it at the local second-hand shop for the price of a packet of fags!

I believe you have to decide whether you're going for fly fishing or otherwise. That determines what sort of rod and other equipment you need. For example - if you're still water fishing you need a stool, if you're fly fishing you don't.
Either way you need a good rod, a keeping net, a bag.
My OH suggests you think about what type of fishing he wants to do, then be selective about what's available at a very good price at Aldi, then buy it!
He assures me it's something boys grow into and never really lose interest in. If your's is interested at 5, I don't think you can go far wrong.

hi all thanks for the replies,got the shop mixed up,its lidl that will have the fishing stuff in it.if anyone has the flyer could they tell me what is good to buy and off what page for sea fishing,tigger maybe your OH could advise.i want to take matty the mersey which has cod ,plaice ,eel and other fish thingies that swim in the sea.

are these any good...rod 14.99 2piece sea rod and reel with 3 ball bearings and 4.6:1 gear ratio,length(cm):240,complete with fishing line and small tackle assortment....rod holder 4.99...is the bite alarm any good 6.99 as i wont know when we get a bite (never fished in me life)will we need a box to put bate in ? and will we need to get something to pull the hook out without hurting the fish.theres 2 accessories sets one is 14.99 and the other 9.99 will we need these? theres also a weight & float set for 5.99 or a spinner set for 6.99,which one if any would you choose.sorry to be a pain

funny story me mam told me,thought i would share.me mam was in a second hand shop when a little boy of about 10yrs old came in with a fishing rod .he asked the fella for his money back as the rod was broken,when tthe fella asked him what was wrong with it,the kid said it wont work,ive sat for hrs and still havnt caught a fish so i think its broke mate!
Hello Grock. Margaret's other half here. I've had a look at the site and, assuming that you don't want to go too mad in case he doesn't like it as much as he thought he would, I would suggest you just set him up with the basics. You (or others) can always add more if he becomes hooked (sorry!).
If he's sea fishing, choose the 2 piece sea fishing rod from the selection of fishing rods (the ones on the left hand side, not the combo rods on the right), a spinner set and a weight and float set. That will get him started.
Depending on how much line and how many hooks come with the rod, he'll soon need more of both. If you're in a generous mood, there's a Stainless Steel hook set that looks OK, and some line too.
The prices seem pretty good. I don't think you'll get them any cheaper at a fishing tackle shop. If it turns out to be his lifetime hobby, no doubt he'll cost you a lot more in the future!
