Steve - as usual, interesting to see all your activities and progress.
My only query is "How do you manage to be away for two weeks in April at the height of the planting-out, sowing, etc. season? Do you have somebody reliable to come and keep your little seedlings watered?
I find that growing vegetables from seed makes it really difficult to fit in holidays longer than a few days in early Spring because of the risk of seedlings not being watered and otherwise attended to.

Does anybody have a magic solution to this dilemma? It's normally June at the earliest before I can feel happy that everything is planted out and capable of looking after itself before I would feel happy about being away for a fortnight.

I keep myself up to time in planting and sowing by keeping an eye on what you're doing. Have you ever used root trainers for peas? I sow about 4- 6 in each trainer and plant them out as a block. Not had any trouble with mice yet.
