Staying up late compo I agree about the commercial terms and the amount of news coverage it gets.

I'm also self employed and there is still alot of snow and ice around so might have to miss my meetings today but at least there's no chance of me not making it to the office in my living room

Anne....Did you speak too soon? Are you getting enough snow NOW!. I usually look out towards your direction (Bodmin moor) and seen for miles, all is a whiteout at present! Snowing very heavy here in SE Cornwall right now. Huge flakes, very pretty.
We've told our guys to stay home. The paint froze on the Tamar Bridge yesterday as they were putting it on!

our kids (11&14)havnt seen snow this deep before, its allways been "hope we get some snow this year" now weve got some ( about 3 inches of powdery stuff), the schools are closed and i had to insist they went outside for a bit after breakfast, they are now sat watching a dvd.

Well, I did say I expected some overnight - so yes we have some lovely snow . Alan has had to reschedule a days teaching and I have so far had to reschedule a client for this morning. As the sun is shining brightly, hopefully it will have melted so I can get into Plymouth this afternoon otherwise I may start losing money

Had a wonderful romp with the dogs down the lanes this morning - couldn't get out to go on the moors. We also had thunder along with heavy snow which is rather peculiar. All 3 of us came back looking rather white and I was very glad of my porrige

Hope you're all coping in the snowy conditions - watched the news this morning and it looks pretty grim (i.e. airports and roads, otherwise looks a picture Over here we're basking in warm sunshine, long may it last - not gloating, we had our own extreme weather recently.

The condition you mentioned about snow and thunder is called thundersnow (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thundersnow) and is quite rare in the UK but becoming more common - another thing we can thank global warming for

Some of the senior schools were closed here because children are stranded in their villages, but it's been great to watch them sledging on the hillside which we see from our windows. This afternoon, with the snow covered by an icy surface, they've reached some great speeds. When I grew up in eastern Europe, we used to tie our sledges together (some two and three seaters, too) and then shoot down the natural slopes and also on a real tobogganning run, where the local toboggan riders practised for their competitions. I am sure we sometimes reached 50 or 60 mph! Truly thrilling and no "health and safety" then!

An awful lot of the Cornish schools were closed today - there are just so many narrow country lanes in this county

How different

I have been watching the news this morning and lunchtime about all the snow further south.
Here, less than 15 miles from Snowdon, it has been sunny and almost warm all morning. I managed to get two chicken houses refelted and, hopefully, weatherproofed.
The forecast does not seem to be predicting much here apart from some snow on Sunday ahead of rain from the west.

It was our turn to be hit hard by snowfall in Devon & Cornwall last night!
There were plenty of people stuck on our two main trunk roads all last night in their cars. To the South of Dartmoor A38 (Chudleigh to Haldon hill) they were finally rescued by the Dartmoor Rescue Teams (taken to local village halls and fed by local volunteers) and police in 4x4's.
To the North of Dartmoor A30, they were rescued by the army (Tavistock/Oakhampton area).
I also heard of people near Liskeard stuck in their cars on the road.
Plenty of abandoned cars blocking the roads this morning.
A lady in North Devon was taken to Hospital to give birth to twins safely in a Fire Engine with chains on.
Some people are now without power (and heat).

There's been more snow in S E & N Cornwall this morning - further west apparently escaped the worst. It was wet stuff but deeper than Tuesday morning. I didn't expect it to last long as we had had quite a lot of rain yesterday but it's still hanging around in the fields.

Hi garden serf - it would seem so. Thankfully I didn't need to go out today! Not too worried about what the weather does over the weekend as nowhere to go - although would like to get into the garden but its going to be far too wet for any work

Well i have been on a completely different job today, been and mucked out, watered and fed all the horses at the village riding school, as none of the horse owners could get there and the owner of the riding school has hurt her back and was in a right predicament.

I had forgot what fun it was getting hay and straw on ones jumper.

The effort keeps you nice and warm!
Mucking out is so satisfying, the smell of the fresh straw, and then the fresh hay when you fill up the nets....
And steaming warm horses. Did you do some grooming as well or just mucking out?
You will find straw where you never thought it could go later
