I asked the same question in July. To see the replies I got, go into Best Practices, Page 2, heading "Saving Shallots".

Nemo. I have been using my own stock of shallots for many years now, personally I prefer a large bulb, so each year I go through my stock selecting the largest, these I keep to one side, I select the best shaped ones. Normally on the shortest day [21 Dec] I pinch the top of the shallot with my fingers about 1/4 inch from the top of the bulb [sorry I am still imperial] and cut the rest of with a pair of scissors , this stops the birds trying to pull the bulb out for nesting material. I pot the bulbs into polystyrene drinking cups [make a couple of drainage holes in the base] these I place against the south facing wall of my house. You wont notice much for some time, but they are making root. In early spring when conditions are OK I plant [using a bulb planter] into my allotment. They are normaly lifted on the longest day, ensuring that you dry them well. Hope this helps, please feel free to email me if I have missed anything out. shallotman
