my fig tree has been in the ground about two years and is 5 ft high and similar size spread. (no ripe figs yet but plenty of unripe and embryos at the moment) i would like to move it as it will soon be too big for its position. any thoughts as to when and whether there might be a problem?

Have you got the roots restricted, I have my fig in a pot sunk into the ground it is four years old and nowhere the size of yours and the previous two years gave loads of fruit last year was very disapointing I put this down to moving house and the cold summer.

Hi nancy Mine is root bound and in a large container and has lots of fruit but if they get any bigger then 15 cms take them of and leave the small ones on the tree for next years fruit

If you dig it out while it is dormant take a good sized rootball, soil and all rather than barerooted and put it into a good sized pot or the other way recommended is a box made from 4 slabs for the sides and rubble in the bottom of the hole,this should minimize to much disturbance and it should grow away happily in the spring.
