Perhaps it's dangerous in case you fall in your water butt; or get mosquitoes breeding in your water butt; or your water butt falls over and lands on you (as mine did ).

I've got 9 water butts around the garden which I use for watering most things and topping up the pond. I always use it for the orchids too (not as grand as they sound, most of them are just clinging to life)
I don't use rain water for seedlings so as not to encourage damping off.
We've got three water butts at the allotment too.
Being at the foot of the Penines we rarely get hosepipe bans, as there is usually plenty of rain. This summer, as last the reservoirs are still full.

Waterbutt is overflowing at the moment - no danger of hosepipe bans round these parts.

Just a word of warning for anybody thinking of attaching a water butt to the downpipe of their house guttering.
Make sure you know whether the guttering on your eaves runs from Left to Right, or Right to Left.
This may seem totally irrelevant but when we installed a water butt at the front of our house, we couldn't understand why it remained virtually empty after a prolonged downpour. Then somebody told us that gutterings are usually installed with a very slight tilt from one end to another, especially if they drain into a sewage/drainage system.
We'd never heard of such a thing but it could mean that if the rain falls into your gutters and they are tilting even slightly in the opposite direction to your water butt, you may not collect as much water as you had hoped.
