Carrots in barrels

I was asked in another thread (which I can't find) how I was doing with carrots in barrels which I've tried for the first time this year.

The answer is BRILLIANT! I've pulled them all from one barrel now and had beautiful, big (mostly), clean, carrot fly free carrots. I have three other barrels growing at various stages from almost ready to pull to just showing seedlings and have every intention of doing this every year from now on.

Previously,with rows of carrots (seeds & pellets, covered with mesh, surrounded by tagetes) I've had less in three years than I've just pulled from one barrel. It works for me

Hi Chantal,
When I was looking into downsizing I did a 2 year experiment growing carrots in the same size frame as my early potatoes 4' x 8' x 1' deep. This was fully protected and the yield was incredible. Perfectly clean straight specimens. I did the experiment for two years to make sure that year one wasn't simply a flook. I did two frames one Early Nantes 2 and the other Autumn King 2. The frame was the equivalent of a 56' row of carrots with all the thinking's along the way. This was easy to manage and used only a very small amount of netting as opposed to a long row. Certainly carrots thrive en masse as long as they are sensibly spaced.
