Although I just can't bring myself to like him, I was interested to see Joe Swift adding lime to the compost he put his winter brassicas into - is this common practice? I have to admit to never having added lime to my soil en masse, mainly because I'm not organised enough on my plot. What does everyone else think to this method and is it worthwhile?

Dear Vivien, i don't do this myself, but since brassicas like lime i don't suppose it's such a bad thing.

I think this was done a lot more years ago, as it saved liming the whole plot, so was a lot cheaper.

And by the way, i have just got back from a 1950's themed wedding reception, and very enjoyable it was as well.

I do this with my brassicas....not sure why. When I first started on the lottie I was told that is was the way to plant them, and I have ever since. With the caulis though I add urea as they seem to prefer that on my soil. I tend to get an ok crop....enough for a meal which is what i'm after.

Hi All, Thanks for the sympathy OH, I'm almost back in action, I've managed to get my shoe on today, so if I can get down the steps I'll be wielding the hoe.

Your 50's wedding reception sounds good fun. What did you wear?

As for Joe Swift and the lime, it is supposed to ward off club root isn't it? I don't put it in the hole, but usually put a circle round each plant like my dad did, at least it keeps slugs away for a while, and in dad's words "sweetens the soil".

I went to the party dressed in my normal going out clothes, i was tempted to by some of those modern 50s clothes, but i do prefer my older ones.

I think i shook everything apart from my kecks.
