Read an report in the paper today that commercial vegetable growers are expecting their fertiliser, seed and spraying costs to triple over the next 12 months due to rising fuel costs. This is alarming and will undoubtedly see an increase in the "grow your own" movement. But perhaps it would be sensible for us all to stock up now on those long-life items that will store.

Yes Alan. It seems to me that the vegetable growers are on a hiding to nothing really, especially now the supermarkets are engaged in their own cost cutting battles to entice customers away from their competitors.

Just a thought, i suppose people could buy veg that hadn't been sprayed, and was grown locally.

Kind Regards, Old Herbaceous.

Yes, I envisage that thefts from allotments will increase. I often feel frustrated about the limited space we have available for vegetable growing in our garden but at least I know it's safe from intruders. We've had two allotments in the past, both of which suffered from theft or vandalism which is so dispiriting. It seems that as the credit crunch tightens, it brings out the worst in people. I accidentally left my wet swimming costume at the gym recently. By the time I'd realised and gone back for it, somebody had pinched it.

Theft of veggies have already started from our allotments!
Most of us have lost some, they even have dug some potatoes from one plot.
But! Travelling folk have moved in about a mile away, and every time they appear something walks!
Still, have to keep the chin up, in spite of the blighters, Just hope they enjoy their ill gotten spoils!
