WD-40

Can't identify that mould? Got a great tip for keeping slugs at bay? Suggestions for organic weed control? Post them here...

OH came home from work and dumped a can of WD-40 in front of me and said "There's the end of all your problems"

Looking at the back of the can it says it stops slugs and snails climbing pots.

Have any of you used this and does it work??

I am trying an experiment with a pot of lettuce to see if it works, will let you all know how things go.

Hi Donedigging,

The downside of course, is waiting up all night so you can bonk them on the head with the can

Seriously though, I knew WD40 was good for a lot of things, but had never heard of that one before.

Cheers, PJ.
Cheers PJ.

I'm just off down the greenhouse. I won't be long...........

I never cease to be amazed at what the stuff will do and there are now apparently 1,999 other things it will do apart from stop slugs!

In America some idiots injected it to "free their joints" so WD-40 now has a disclaimer saying not for internal use, or something like that.

I believe they later sued...

" A former professional footballer reckons he's found an ununsual cure for arthritis - WD40.

Eric McKaig, 70, of Fane Close, Stamford, has ignored medical advice and joined a growing number of people who use the lubricant to ease their creaking, painful joints.

And he swears it has ended his days of pain and given him his quality of life back.

The retired sales manager, who used to play centre forward for Nottingham Forest in the 1950s, said: "It's been an absolute Godsend for me. A few weeks ago I was even running around the garden with my grandchildren and I haven't been able to do that for about three years."

But the manufacturers of WD-40 are urging people not to follow suit.

The company said: "The spray has thousands of uses, but treating stiff joints is definitely not one of them. The product has not been designed for use on the human body and has not been medically tested. If you are suffering from joint pain you should always seek advice from your GP."

try reading this...
Quote
FbxA is a novel member of a family of proteins that contain an F-box and WD40 repeats and that target specific proteins for degradation via proteasomes. In fruiting bodies formed from cells where the fbxA gene is disrupted (fbxA− cells), the spore mass fails to fully ascend the stalk. In addition, fbxA− slugs continue to migrate under environmental conditions where the parental strain immediately forms fruiting bodies. Consistent with this latter behaviour, the development of fbxA− cells is hypersensitive to ammonia, the signaling molecule that regulates the transition from the slug stage to terminal differentiation. The slug comprises an anterior prestalk region and a posterior prespore region and the fbxA mRNA is highly enriched in the prestalk cells. The prestalk zone of the slug is further subdivided into an anterior pstA region and a posterior pstO region. In fbxA− slugs the pstO region is reduced in size and the prespore region is proportionately expanded. Our results indicate that FbxA is part of a regulatory pathway that controls cell fate decisions and spatial patterning via regulated protein degradation.

OK, back to your original question, I tried it on terracotta pots. It didn't work. Maybe it works on plastic pots in the same way as vaseline, but in the same way make sure you don't want to move your pots around or you'll have icky sticky fingers!

Hi Angi,

There's definitely a group of people who believe WD40 is the answer to squeaky joints aand dodgy moves. There was a whole programme about it on Radio 4 last year.

Could be worth a try.
